About the Artist

Allan Redfern is a North Wales based Artist, living on the Isle of Anglesey with his wife Lesley, and English Setter Bryn.

Allan has been painting on Anglesey since 2001 and gained a Fine Art degree since moving here. Previously he taught art in central London, was a senior lecturer at Manchester Metropolitan University for twenty eight years and more recently has taught in Bangor.  He has exhibited at various venues in North Wales and beyond. More locally he has had solo shows at Oriel Ynys Mon, Ger y Fenai and Canolfan Beaumaris. He has contributed to group shows throughout North Wales and has been a participant in the Anglesey Open Studios event for several years.  In 2008 he won the People’s Choice award at the AAG Biennial at Oriel Mon.  His work is held in private collections in the UK and beyond.

When painting in oils he works with both brushes, palette knives and small wood cutting tools.  He also uses acrylics and some of his work is multi-media. For each medium he uses his methods of working are different and evolving.  His choice of medium has a significant influence on both his technique and the scale of his work.  His largest paintings are usually done in acrylic.

A large portion of his work is done within a ten mile radius of where he lives;  he draws his inspiration from the landscape of Anglesey and Snowdonia in its various seasons and moods. Whatever his medium or technique he has a particular interest in relationships between the built and natural environment and the interplay of various forms of light on what he sees.  Allan sees painting as a journey in which the exploration of process is particularly fascinating, unsettling and exciting.
